Having a Dem Good Time in South Meck!

8/3/2018

South Mecklenburg precincts now hold several regular social events. Called "A Dem Good Time," they began with every Third Thursday at Blackfinn Ballantyne from 6-8 pm (still going strong!). Matthews Democrats have held a few, and now there is a second ongoing social on First Thursdays at Brooklyn Pizza from 6-8 (Rea Rd & Colony Rd).

At the August 2 event, around 50 people came to talk with elected officials and candidates such as Trevor Fuller, Mecklenburg County Commissioner, and state senator Jeff Jackson.

Candidates drop by to share their messages, but it's also a great time to meet other friendly Democrats and find out about local opportunities to help the party!

Feel free to start your OWN Dem Good Time wherever you are! Events can be publicized via flyers, Facebook and Nextdoor, and word of mouth.

Mecklenburg County Democratic Party's Official Statement Against President Trump's Immigration Ban:

2/15/2017

(Charlotte, NC) January 30, 2017

President Trump continues to be out of line with longstanding American values of openness, tolerance, and equal opportunity for all. On Friday, President Trump initiated a campaign promise to implement a “Muslim Ban” fueled by irrational fear of Muslims and refugees entering our country. President Trump’s use of fear mongering to create divisions is nothing new. During the presidential campaign, Trump often utilized fear tactics to portray himself as our country’s protector. President Trump stereotyped Mexicans as rapists, smeared African-American communities as “crime infested” and constantly used Islamophobic rhetoric for political gain. President Trump is no longer a candidate for President and must understand that as President his actions and words have consequences. As a nation of immigrants, President Trump’s executive order has the effect of tarnishing America’s rich history as a beacon of hope to children, families, and individuals fleeing war and persecution in hopes of a new beginning.

Mecklenburg County Democratic Party joins Americans across the country in condemning President Trump's actions and remind him of his oath to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution. Although the office of President of the United States has broad powers with respect to immigration, under the law, the President may not place a blanket travel ban on individuals based on religion or national origin. Thankfully, America is a nation of laws and we hope the courts will continue to take action and strike down President Trump’s unconstitutional and un-American agenda. We must never forget, as Americans our strength has always come from our diversity and willingness to welcome people of all backgrounds.
